HOME Ice Bath: Cleaning tips

Some helpful tips for giving your Brass Monkey some TLC

On this page we've compiled some useful cleaning tips from frequent questions from customers. These are in addition to our standard regular care guidance

Shortcut to tip on this page:

1. Cleaning products

2. Cleaning the stainless steel

3. Reusing pleated filters

4. Maintaining wood panelling

1. Cleaning products

We recommend the use of Huwa-San TR3 (or any food-grade hydrogen peroxide 3%), which is silver-stabilised hydrogen peroxide. This breaks down into water and oxygen when used in the bath and creates no nasty by-products.

Please note that the use of chlorine or bromine or any other harsh chemicals in the bath will deteriorate the steel, which will rust and break down eventually. Using these types of chemicals will void the warranty.

2. Cleaning the stainless steel

Regular cleaning using the correct method will increase the life of the steel and reduce the risk of rust.

There are 3 factors that contribute to the rust and deterioration of the steel.

  • Using harsh abrasive pads damaging the surface of the steel
  • The use of highly acidic or highly alkaline cleaning agents
  • Contact with chlorine or a pool or marine environment

Ways to protect the steel:

  • As part of our recommended weekly wipe down:
    • Wipe the steel above the water line and down into the water line with a clean damp microfibre cloth
    • Clean any surface deposits or discolouration to the steel above the water line using either bicarbonate of soda or a neutral pH cleaner such as diluted washing up liquid on a microfibre cloth
  • As part of our recommended 3 monthly water change:
    • Clean the bath with either bicarbonate of soda or a neutral pH cleaner such as diluted washing up liquid.  Rinse the sides and base and wipe dry with a clean microfibre cloth

3. Reusing pleated filters

Some filters can be reused is washed and dried. The pleated filter we now supply with 2.5 ice baths can be reused if cleaned. However please note a reused filter is likely to need changing more often, and won't last forever. It will need disposing of when dirt has become embedded in the filter.

All our recommended frequencies for changing filters are based using new filters. If you choose to reuse your filters, use your judgment and check them weekly. Poor filtration can affect the performance of your bath and clarity of the water.

If reusing a pleated filter, follow these simple steps:

  • Rinse away any visible scum under a tap
  • Soak in a chlorine solution (such as Lo-Chlor).
  • Rinse again and leave to dry
  • When drying, ensure the filter is fully dry and has regained it's shape before using in your bath

4. Maintaining Wood Panelling

Regular maintenance is essential to ensure the longevity and good condition of the wood top deck and panelling. Annual maintenance tasks include cleaning, sanding, and reapplying protective coatings. By taking the time to properly care for your wood items each year, you can prevent damage from moisture, sunlight, and wear and tear, ultimately extending their lifespan.

Remember to follow these guidelines and use appropriate products to keep your wood looking its best for years to come.

Depending on the finish selected on your bath at the time of purchase you will require the following type of wood cream:

You will need:

  • Rubio Monocoat wood cream
  • 80-120 grit sandpaper
  • 240 grit sandpaper
  • Small foam roller and tray
  • Microfibre cloth
  • Sugar soap

Step 1: Prepare the wood by cleaning with sugar soap and warm water.  Let dry

Step 2: Sand the wood using 80-120 grit sandpaper.  Use a sanding block to get an even finish

Step 3: Repeat the above step using a 240 grit sandpaper for a fine finish

Step 4: Vacuum the wood to remove dust and wood debris
